ALFRISTON, NEW FOREST, CASTLE COMBE & MAYFAIR

A 15-night private journey through England's quiet south, from the chalk ridges of the South Downs to the ancient coastal canopy of the New Forest, the honeyed valleys of Wiltshire, and the timeless prestige of Mayfair. Designed for travelers who prefer to know a place deeply rather than simply see it.

Set the Scene: The Quiet South: Sussex, the New Forest & the Great West Way®

There is an older, quieter England that exists beyond the reach of the hurried traveler: an England of rolling chalk downs, ancient coastal ancient forests where wild ponies roam beneath centuries-old oaks, honey-stoned medieval valleys, and the timeless prestige of Mayfair drawing rooms.

This journey traces the gentle arc of England’s quiet south, beginning in the refined calm of South Kensington, winding through the timber-framed smuggling lanes of the South Downs and the ancient maritime coast of Hampshire, before turning inland along the historic Great West Way® corridor and closing in the heart of London. It is a route sculpted around long estate mornings, deep country firesides, and roads that ask you not to conquer the map, but to dwell within it.

Arrive first in London, letting the unhurried cadence take hold over a quiet night at The Kensington before the city gives way to open sky. In East Sussex, step into the medieval stillness of Alfriston, where 15th-century timber beams, flint-walled courtyards, and the dramatic white cliffs of the South Downs set the rhythm of your stay at The Star. Here, mornings begin with walks along ancient ridge trails and afternoons slip away over quiet pints in historic village inns.

Turn west toward the sea, where Hampshire’s ancient canopy meets the Solent coast at Chewton Glen. Tucked between ancient woodland and open water, country life unfolds at your own pace: restorative hours in hydrotherapy waters, coastal breezes carried through wildflower gardens, and quiet afternoon drives past free-roaming ponies deep within the New Forest.

Ascend into Wiltshire along the romantic curves of the southern Cotswolds to settle into the peerless seclusion of The Manor House at Castle Combe. Framed by tumbling streams, honeyed limestone, and Michelin-starred dining, this 14th-century estate sanctuary immerses you in the quintessential beauty of the English countryside, where the greatest luxury is having nowhere else you need to be.

Return finally to London for a grand farewell at The Connaught in Mayfair. Amid world-class dining, fireside cocktails, and the serene sanctuary of the Aman Spa, your journey through England’s most cherished landscapes draws to a restful, magnificent close.

How This Journey Is Designed

Unhurried by design. Yours to shape.

This journey is built around long, generous stays in four distinct country settings, paired with thoughtful bookends in London. We deliberately avoid the fatigue of one- and two-night hotel hops.

Your private chauffeur-driver-guide removes the friction of navigation, narrow country roads, parking, and ferry logistics. If a morning calls for a vineyard tasting or a historic castle, it is seamlessly arranged; if the afternoon turns warm or you simply want to sit by the fire, read in the garden, or enjoy the spa, the day yields to your energy.

Prefer a fuller schedule? We can build one before you travel. Prefer to decide as you go? Your driver-guide and curated area guides make spontaneous exploration effortless.

Night 1:

London Arrival

The Kensington Hotel · A Soft Landing

Your journey begins at The Kensington, giving you time to arrive, settle in and recover from the flight before the countryside journey begins.

There is no need to start England at full speed.

Walk if you feel like walking. Have a long lunch. Explore a neighborhood you already love or simply enjoy the hotel and allow yourself to arrive properly.

The following day, your private driver-guide carries you out of London and toward Sussex, where the pace begins to change.

The Star, Alfriston

(4 Nights) ·

Village England, Without the Rush

At The Star, the journey settles into the South Downs and one of Sussex’s most characterful historic villages.

Alfriston is the kind of place that rewards being given time. Old buildings line the village streets, countryside begins almost at the doorstep, and the surrounding Downs offer a very different experience of southern England from the one found in London. At the Star, you will enjoy a delicious meal with a wine paring in the finely decorated dining room, with some incredible original art work or on the terrance.

Days here can combine one thoughtfully chosen experience with plenty of room around it, a countryside walk, a historic house or garden, a coastal excursion, a long lunch, or simply time to wander the village without needing to be anywhere next.

Over four unhurried days, experience the towering chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters, the medieval fortress of Lewes Castle, and the historic landscape gardens of Sheffield Park. Pause for afternoon tea near Amberley Castle or wander among the flint cottages of the Cuckmere Valley. Evenings bring candlelit village dining and open hearths . This is where The Quiet South really begins.

Days 2–5:

East Sussex & The South Downs

Days 6–8:

The Hampshire Coast

Chewton Glen Hotel & Spa

(3 Nights) ·

Woodland, Water & Room to Exhale

Here, the landscape changes. Ancient woodland, open heath and the nearby sea create a stay that can move easily between countryside and coast without requiring another hotel change.

Chewton Glen becomes more than somewhere to sleep between excursions. The estate is part of the experience, a place for spa time, long meals, woodland walks and afternoons when leaving the property may suddenly feel unnecessary.

Some days may carry you farther into the New Forest or toward the coast. Others may begin with one carefully chosen experience and leave the remainder completely open.

The point is not to fill every hour.

It is to have enough time here that you do not need to.

To help you slow down and relax, and our compliments, you will have the opportunity to take advantage of a spa treatment, choose to order a bottle of wine in the morning, simply because you can.

While You’re Here

Depending on your interests, your stay may include time crossing the Solent on a dedicated day excursion to the Isle of Wight, explore the historic naval docks of Portsmouth, or stroll the coastline toward Dorset’s Jurassic cliffs at Durdle Door with privately arranged local touring, or simply enjoying the resort at your own pace.

An open afternoon is part of the journey, not an empty space in it.

Days 9–12:

Castle Combe & the Great West Way®

The Manor House, Castle Combe (4 Nights) ·

Limestone Rhythms, Roman Bath & Estates

From Hampshire, the journey turns north and west toward Wiltshire stopping en route for an exclusive tour and private tasting at Bluestone Vineyards. Arrive at the 14th-centuryThe Manor House, Castle Combe, set within one of England’s most evocative historic villages.

This is a landscape made for the Unhurried Voyages Collection™.

From here, the Great West Way® opens into ancient sites, gardens, market towns, country estates and smaller communities where the experience often lies as much in the road between places as in the destination itself.

Castle Combe provides a quieter base from which to explore. Rather than moving again after a single night, there is time to become familiar with the village, return to the hotel between outings and choose experiences according to your interests rather than a rigid sightseeing schedule.

One day may lead to Stonehenge or Newark Park and the surrounding ancient landscape. Another might unfold through Bristol or Devizes, Wiltshire villages, gardens, local makers or a countryside lunch.

And there should still be time to come back early.

While You’re Here

Your days may be shaped around the discovery of the Roman Baths and Georgian crescents of Bath, explore ancient stone circles at Avebury, or wander the film-set lanes of Lacock and Corsham, with the freedom to select what genuinely interests you rather than trying to collect every landmark.

This is the Great West Way® experienced slowly.

Days 13–16: London Finale

The Connaught, Mayfair

(3 Nights) ·

Culture, Quiet Elegance & Departure Ease

The countryside eventually gives way to London, but the journey does not need to surrender its pace.

Your final stay is at The Connaught, returning you to Mayfair with several days to enjoy the capital without feeling obligated to conquer it.

By this point, London is not another destination demanding a checklist. It is the finale.

Return to somewhere you love. Explore a gallery. Shop. Book the restaurant you have been thinking about for months. Arrange a private experience around a particular interest, or leave an afternoon completely unplanned.

Your driver-guide and curated recommendations remain available, allowing the city to be shaped around you rather than the other way around.

And when the journey comes to its close, there is time for one final dinner and one final evening in London before your private transfer to the airport.

The Quiet South ends where it began, in London, but after seeing a very different England in between.
