WHERE IT ALL BEGAN: THE HISTORY OF AN ICON
The romance of the Orient Express first captured the global imagination in 1883, when the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits welcomed its very first passengers on an inaugural, legendary journey to Constantinople. For nearly a century, it stood as the ultimate symbol of cinematic travel elegance until it completed its final historic voyage in 1977. Shortly after, the brand found a home with the French railway company SNCF in 1982, but the true physical rebirth of the legend began unexpectedly in 2016. It was then that historian Arthur Mettetal discovered 17 forgotten, original Orient Express carriages tucked away beneath the snow on the Belarus-Polish border.
This miraculous discovery set off a grand revival. In 2018, the Accor hospitality group acquired the iconic brand with a bold vision to expand its legacy from trains into ultra-luxury hotels and sailing yachts. By 2019, a meticulous renovation of the historic interiors was underway, helmed by visionary designer Maxime D’Angeac. The brand's cultural gravity grew even stronger in 2024 through a powerhouse partnership between LVMH and Accor, paving the way for the magnificent 2025 hotel debuts of Orient Express La Minerva in Rome and Orient Express Venezia in Venice.
