THE VENICE SIMPLON-ORIENT-EXPRESS | THE GOLDEN AGE OF RAIL TRAVEL
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express
Step aboard and enter another century. The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is an enduring expression of Art Deco travel: beautifully restored heritage carriages, polished wood, brass details, crisp white linen, and the unmistakable sense that the journey itself is the occasion.
As the train glides across Europe, landscapes unfold beyond the window and the pace of modern travel begins to dissolve. Days are shaped by long lunches, the quiet ritual of returning to your cabin, and evenings that ask for a little glamour. Dinner is an event. A nightcap in Bar Car ’3674’ becomes a memory. And somewhere between the first toast and the final piano note, the voyage takes on a life of its own.
This is not a journey for travelers seeking the largest suite or the quickest route. It is for those who have always dreamed of experiencing travel as it once was: elegant, intimate, sociable, and wonderfully deliberate.
Accommodations
The train’s accommodations range from authentic Historic Cabins to elevated Suites, six richly appointed Grand Suites, and the singular L’Observatoire, a private, one-carriage suite created as an immersive world of its own.
Historic Cabins preserve the intimacy of classic rail travel, with upper and lower berths transformed into a daytime banquette and shared facilities at the end of each carriage. For travelers who want greater space and privacy, Suites and Grand Suites include en-suite bathrooms and either double or twin-bed configurations.
L’Observatoire is the train’s most private expression of luxury: an entire carriage dedicated to a single suite, with its own bedroom, bathroom, lounge, library, and private dining space.
Wining & Dining
Three restaurant cars: Étoile du Nord, Côte d’Azur, and L’Oriental, set the stage for beautifully paced lunches and formal evening dinners. Expect seasonal cuisine, sommelier-selected wines, Art Deco surroundings, and the pleasure of dressing for an evening that is meant to be remembered.
After dinner, the evening continues in legendary Bar Car ’3674’, where cocktails, live piano, and conversation create the train’s most enduring ritual.
Where It Travels
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express journeys across more than 15 European cities, with routes and seasonal itineraries that may connect destinations such as Paris, Venice, Florence, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Istanbul, and the Italian coast. The classic London-to-Venice journey traditionally unfolds over two days, with one night aboard.

Seasonal Dining
Dining aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express evolves with the journey itself. Menus celebrate the regions the train travels through, drawing on seasonal ingredients and transforming them into refined cuisine with a distinctly European sense of occasion.
Every meal becomes another chapter in the story: breakfast as the Alps appear beyond your window, a lingering lunch between cities, or an elegant multi-course dinner beneath the glow of Lalique glass. It is dining that feels less like a meal and more like a celebration of slow travel.
Each of the train’s three historic restaurant cars has its own distinct character, bringing exceptional cuisine, attentive service, and Art Deco surroundings together in an experience designed to be savored. The train’s dining cars are restored 1920s spaces, and official menus emphasize seasonal ingredients and regional inspiration.
Étoile du Nord
Built in 1926, Étoile du Nord is distinguished by its exquisite floral marquetry and rich woodwork. Its beautifully restored interior evokes the elegance of Europe’s great railway era, when dinner on board was an occasion in itself.
For private celebrations, the Imperial Table offers an especially intimate setting for a small group ideal for a milestone, family gathering, or simply an evening made more memorable by sharing it together. The car’s 1926 origins and celebrated marquetry are part of its documented heritage.
L’Oriental
L’Oriental brings a deeper, more dramatic mood to the table. Built in 1927 and finished with distinctive black lacquer panels, it offers an atmosphere that is sophisticated, intimate, and quietly theatrical.
Settle in over beautifully prepared cuisine as the scenery moves beyond the window, surrounded by one of the train’s most evocative interiors.
Côte d’Azur
Côte d’Azur is renowned for the luminous René Lalique glass panels that transform every meal into an elegant occasion. Built in 1929, the carriage pairs extraordinary craftsmanship with the romance of the Riviera.
Today, guests dine amid lovingly restored details that make this one of the most visually memorable spaces aboard the train.
Evening attire is part of the ritual—an invitation to dress for the occasion and let dinner become one of the journey’s defining moments.
Life On Board - Bar Car '3674'
As daylight fades, Bar Car ’3674’ becomes the social heart of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Guests gather over expertly mixed cocktails, Champagne, and fine spirits while the resident pianist fills the carriage with music that drifts gently from one carriage to the next.
Conversations linger as Europe slips quietly past the windows. Whether marking a special occasion or simply surrendering to the romance of the journey, Bar Car ’3674’ captures the spirit of the train at its most convivial where an evening may begin with a single drink and unfold into something unforgettable.
Before You Board
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express rewards travelers who embrace its rituals. Cabins are intimate, evenings are formal, and the atmosphere is intentionally removed from the speed and convenience of ordinary travel.
Dress for the occasion
Formal evening attire is requested for dinner, and many guests embrace black tie or their most glamorous evening wear. Smart daywear is appropriate; jeans are not permitted on board.
Pack with intention
Cabin space is limited. Guests should bring one piece of hand luggage, one suit carrier or overnight bag for the cabin, and a larger suitcase for storage in the baggage car, which is not accessible during the journey.
Choose the right accommodation
Historic Cabins offer the most authentic expression of overnight rail travel, with compact upper and lower berths and shared facilities. Suites, Grand Suites, and L’Observatoire offer private bathrooms and progressively more space, privacy, and elevated inclusions.
Share needs early
Vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary requests should be provided at booking. Belmond will do its best to accommodate them, but requests requiring strict religious preparation cannot be guaranteed. Guests with reduced mobility should also discuss their needs before booking, as the heritage carriages have physical constraints.
Unplug a little
Wi‑Fi is available throughout the train but can be intermittent in rural areas. To preserve the atmosphere on board, Belmond asks guests to limit mobile-phone and electronic-device use to their cabins.
